Rand Mcnally 2007 Road Atlas

United States-Large Scale

Rand McNally
2006

A road atlas seems like such a boring thing, but it can be really exciting, even overwhelming, when you are planning a road trip. I bought the 2001 edition of this Atlas before going on a cross-country road trip that year and it was really helpful to me for both that trip and later trips.

Unfortunately, some of the advertised information may not help you that much. For example, the section on road construction did not contain any warnings of the major construction projects on the road I was to be traveling (U.S. 50) in several of the states on my route. Each state for which construction was listed, however, contained a telephone number for updates. I didn't call any of them. It's possible that these numbers may be of assistance, even outside of the publication year. 34 states were listed in this section.

Despite this, maps are maps, and the amount of information contained in this book is well worth the price. It even contains local street maps for some major cities.

One of the best things I got related to my trips was a laminated wall map from the local Rand McNally store. I used different colored markers to map the paths of my various cross country trips so that I could track which states I had left to visit! So far, I've missed South Dakota, Alaska, and the New England states north of New York. This would be a fun activity for kids on the road.
